Senate Passes Companion Version of Hope’s ‘Limbo Nine’ Debt Collection Protections 

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 10, 2026 — The Michigan Senate today passed Senate Bill 1137, the Senate version of state Rep. Kara Hope’s (D-Holt) House Bill 6230. This legislation would modernize Michigan’s garnishment laws to better protect families’ essential property from debt collectors. The bill is one of the “Limbo Nine” measures reintroduced after prolonged litigation and months of delay. Hope issued the following statement in response:

“When someone falls behind on debt, the law should not force them to give up the things they need to get back on their feet. That means no one should have to lose the car they need to get to work, the home they live in, or the tools they use to earn a living. This bill draws a reasonable line between collecting a debt and taking away the essentials of daily life. After nearly a year and a half of delay, Michigan workers and families have waited long enough. House Republicans should stop holding up progress and pass these commonsense protections.”
